Red Hot Chili Peppers Accused Of Plagiarism

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been accused of plagiarism by a radio station in America.

The station, WGMD in Delaware, has produced pretty damning evidence that the bands last single ‘Dani California’ is a rip off of a Tom Petty track called ‘Mary Jane’s Last Dance’.

Producer Jared Morris said: “The chord progression, the melody, the tempo, the key, the lyrical theme… they’re identical.”

Show presenter Dan Gaffney has produced this MP3 to show up the similarities and help people make their own decisions.

They were wrong about the tempo of the song. That mp3 sped up the tempo of the Tom Petty song a considerable amount.

some similiarities . don't think they sound exactly alike enough to say its plagiarism.even so i don't think for one moment that tom would have a problem with it.he might even be sittin back with a fatty jammin' some peppers right now!!!!

as a matter of fact .rock music has a way of complimenting it self through similarities. bands have built their sound on fusing different other artist sounds together to create something different yet reminescent of anothers.hence, the importance of influences.i.e. the peppers might have been influenced by tom petty in some way and want to COMPLIMENT him. they do it admirably. the album is great for anyone who hasn'y purchased it. disc 1 is the better of the 2.

Ok guys, I have to stick up for the Chili Peppers on this one. It does seem that the tempo of the Petty song was sped up from the original, and even in the MP3, the RHCP's song seems to be slightly faster. Also, as a talented musician, I can tell you from a musical standpoint that if you listen to the MP3, it is a four-chord chord progression, and while the four chords are fairly similiar, the RHCP guitar part is slightly different in that the 3rd chord is either a minor or a seven. Either way, that is entirely a different chord than the Tom Petty song. Check it out for yourself. Listen to the 3rd chord of both chord progressions.

There is a difference and everybody needs to get over it. Both are great songs and this is the best Peppers cd yet and i would suggest getting it to anyone. Go peppers

HAHA! yeah i'll have to agree there are some similarities. although its not completely the same song, tom petty would be proud to have them, not to copy, but somewhat honor his song???...maybe. i don't know. both sound good to me.
