Aussie pop-rockers Jet launch new single

Jet's second album looks set to launch the band even further into the rock'n'roll stratosphere, given the interest for the band's new music in the US.

With not a skerrick of second-album syndrome in sight, Jet have reached the No. 15 spot on the Billboard "Hot Modern Rock Tracks" chart in the US, based on airplay of their song Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is.

While the first single has not been released for sale in the US, it has achieved the chart placement based on airplay alone because of interest from radio stations in North America.

Ahead of the album Shine On's release, lead singer Nic Cester has continued to reveal the strong emotions behind his songwriting for the new album that emerged after the death of his father, John, from cancer. Obviously there was an enormous impact on Cester and his brother Chris, the band's drummer, not to mention the other members of their family.

"The ballads are a lot deeper," Cester told Rolling Stone. "It's all resulted in a journey. It was a way to vent a lot of issues, feelings and anger. We ran a whole gamut of emotions over the last few years. You don't bury dad and go out and write the f---ing party classic."

Cester also said the band felt a need to match the level of expectation surrounding the new release.

"The first time around we were a pop band from Melbourne, and this time around we're playing much bigger venues," he said.

"We wanted to make sure the new album was going to be five times better . . . [but] obviously, we're still Jet. We're still a rock band."

The single Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, which is already receiving strong airplay locally, is due for release in Australia on Friday. Shine On will be released in Australia three days earlier than in the US, with the album scheduled to be in store locally on September 30. American music stores will get the album on October 3.

Fans in the northern hemisphere will be the first to experience Jet in full tour mode for the new album.

The band was scheduled to play at Britain's Reading festival last weekend and it has announced a US tour that begins in Texas in a fortnight.
