Portishead Debut New Material At Surprise Show

While this isn't gulf coast related music news, but I am so excited I could kiss your mom. Portishead rocks my socks.

Portishead shocked fans in Bristol, UK on Sunday night by playing a surprise show and debuting a new song.

Under the guise of Grumpy Man DJs the trio of Geoff Barrow, Adrian Uttley and Beth Gibbons surprised even venue staff up were only expecting them to be in control of the turntables.

It was the bands first live performance since 2005’s Tsunami benefit show and included a rendition of ‘Wandering Star’ and the as yet untitled new material.

One witness told Pitchfork: "The second song was brand new, presumably from the forthcoming (if you believe the rumours, sometime this year) album.

“Rarely have I seen a room full of people all wear exactly the same facial expression, but when I looked at the crowd everyone had their mouths gaping and eyes wide open as if they were witnessing an alien landing.

“It was wonderful. The new song was completely gorgeous, carried by Beth's vocals and with very low-key instrumentation."

Yesterday Geoff Barrow posted a message on the bands myspace page thanking those who attended and apologising for not letting more people know the gig was happening.
